Question by gmonte33: Bat experts, such as Birdgirl?
When bats feed at night do they tend to stay in the same area as where they roost? Last summer we had a bat get in the house three times. We think we found how they were getting in and sealed the holes. I’m terrified of them and am home alone when they come out. So for 6 weeks I had to sit outside at dusk and watch for them to fly around. Then I would look in the house through the windows for an hour to make sure the coast was clear. Every night I only saw one or maybe two (but it could have been the same one). My husband did some repairs this winter and took the tape off a hole in the wall. One got in again last night. Now I’m stuck sitting outside again. We have gaps on the side of the house up by the roof and want to seal them after the bats leave for the night but don’t want to trap any in. When do they have babies and what’s the best month to do this?

I wouldn’t consider myself to be an expert on any subject. To me the term expert means there is nothing left for that person to learn. But…I have worked extensively with microbats here in Australia. Have done several training courses, worked with bat specialist… I’ve even gone out and gotten vaccinations so that I can safely handle bats…. So that said…bats roost in the same spot every night. So, you must have a roosting place near your home. Don’t worry about baby bats. They ride on their mother until they are old enough to fly on their own. Just block the gaps after they fly out at night. You might want to consider providing nesting boxes somewhere outside and away from your house. That way they have an alternative place to go. There’s a great website for info on microbats. Bat Conservation International http://batcon.org/home/default.asp I do sympathize! They are creepy looking little buggars, and in the US they can potentially be dangerous…but they do us a great service by consuming heaps and heaps of pesky insects every night.

Question by Danielle: do bats eat fireflies/lightning bugs?
I want to build bat houses to cut down on the mosquitoes but I don’t want there to be less fireflies..they’re so pretty around here haha.

Yes, they eat a variety of insects, including fireflies.

I counted 36 tonight. I don’t think all of them made it back from the bad weather last night, so hopefully better numbers tomorrow.
